Jim Collins Level Five Leadership: The Triumph of Humility and Fierce Resolve Harvard Business Review, 2003, Product 5831
Of 1435 Fortune 500 Companies, only 11 achieved and sustained greatness --- returns over 3 times the market for 15 years after a major transition period. In addition to four other qualities, each of these 11 leaders had Level 5 Leadership == Humility + Will.
Level 5 Leaders routinely credit others, external factors and luck for their companies ' success, but blame themselves for poor results. Act quietly, calmly and determinedly, relying on inspirited standards, not charisma, to motivate. Exhibit unwavering will to do whatever it takes to product great results, to have their company be even more successful in the future.
Examples: General Electric's Charles Coffin; Bill Allen of Boeing; Sam Walton of Wal-Mart; George Merck of Merck; Darwin Smith of Kimberly Clark; James Burke of J&J
Four other qualities:
First Who: get the right people on the bus, then figure out where to drive
Paradox: deal with brutal facts of the situation + have absolute faith that company will prevail,
Build=up Breakthrough flywheel: keep pushing until breakthrough
Hedgehog: intersection of three circles: what are we best at; how economics work best; what ignites people's passion
